MAIN ATTRACTIONS

Lagoa Azul and Lagoa do Peixe (near Barreirinhas): Access is usually by 4x4 vehicles and takes about 30 to 50 minutes through trails and dunes from the park entrance in Barreirinhas.

Other lagoons in the Lagoa Azul/Bonita Circuit: Travel time between lagoons may vary, but tours typically last a few hours.

Atins (access via the mouth of the Preguiças River): The speedboat ride from Barreirinhas to Atins takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the tide and type of boat. From Atins, other lagoons and dunes are accessible.

Lençóis Crossing (for more remote areas): This expedition usually takes a few days and involves 4x4 vehicles rides and hiking through the dunes. The time to reach departure points may vary.

Our team works from Sunday to Sunday, from 8AM to 8PM to better serve you!

Check-in is done in person at the reception, according to local availability, from 2PM until 5PM.

If you need early Checkin or after 5PM, please let us know as soon as possible. If you do not have a guest, we love to help!

On the day of your arrival, we will send instructions. It is important that you have Wi-fi to receive them. Let me know as soon as possible if you need something different.

Guests need to be identified, for everyone’s safety, so when 2 days are missing for their arrival, we will reinforce the photo request of the documents. Don’t worry, your data will be protected in light of the LGPD.

Checkout is in person. Our maid will arrive at 12PM to clean your accommodation for the next family.

If you need a late checkout, please let us know as soon as possible. If you don’t have a guest later, we love to help!

THE LENÇÓIS MARANHENSES

The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (PNLM) encompasses the municipality of Barreirinhas and was established in June 1981. It covers an area of 155,000 hectares, with 90,000 hectares made up of shifting white sand dunes and seasonal rainwater lagoons.

Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita are among the largest lagoons in the region, featuring natural pools of crystal-clear water. The park consists of restinga areas, fields of mobile dunes, and an oceanic coastline, attracting visitors from around the world year-round.

The most famous town in the Lençóis Maranhenses region, Barreirinhas, is located 250 km from São Luís, the capital of Maranhão, and serves as the main gateway for exploring the area.

The history of this paradise officially began to be recorded on June 2, 1981, when the federal government, recognizing the uniqueness and vulnerability of this ecosystem, decreed the creation of the park. The aim was to protect this extraordinary landscape, ensuring the preservation of its geological formations, biological diversity, and water resources.

Fascinating facts about the Lençóis Maranhenses:

Temporary lagoons, fleeting life: The famous lagoons are not permanent! They form during the rainy season (usually from January to June) when rainwater is trapped between the impermeable dunes. Once the rains end and evaporation occurs, many lagoons dry out, only to reappear in the natural cycle the following year.

Resilient fish: Even though the lagoons are isolated freshwater pools among the dunes, some species of fish manage to survive. One theory is that their eggs endure the dry season in the moist mud and hatch with the return of the rains. Another possibility is that birds bring eggs attached to their feet. This demonstrates the remarkable adaptability of life in such an extreme environment!

The dance of the dunes: The dunes are ever-moving! Constant strong winds, especially in the dry season, cause the dunes to shift, revealing new shapes and uncovering or hiding lagoons. The landscape is always changing.

A desert with water: Despite its desert-like appearance and vast sandy areas, Lençóis Maranhenses receives a large amount of rain in the wet season. This rare combination of abundant water and strong winds is what creates the stunning lagoons.

The influence of the Preguiças River: The Preguiças River, which runs along the park’s western border, contributes to the formation of the Lençóis. It carries sediments from inland areas, which, upon reaching the ocean, are reworked by the winds and transformed into dunes along the coast.

TRANSPORTATION

Hello! To reach Barreirinhas, the main gateway to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, you have several air and ground transportation options:

By plane:

Barreirinhas Airport (BRB): The airline Azul offers regular flights on small aircraft (Cessna with capacity for 9 passengers), connecting Barreirinhas to São Luís and Parnaíba. Frequency and availability may vary, so it is recommended to check with the airline before planning your trip. Fares are generally higher.

Santo Amaro Airport: There are no regular flights to Santo Amaro. Access is mainly by road from Barreirinhas.

Parnaíba Airport (PHB): Located in Piauí, about 3.5 hours by car from Barreirinhas. This is a good alternative for those also wishing to visit the Parnaíba Delta.

Jericoacoara Airport (JJD): This airport is farther away (approximately 9 hours by car) and is recommended for those planning to travel the entire Rota das Emoções.

Marechal Cunha Machado International Airport in São Luís (SLZ): This is the main airport for those visiting Lençóis Maranhenses, receiving direct flights from various major cities across Brazil.

How to get from São Luís to Barreirinhas:

Transfer (Van or Minibus): This is the most common and practical option. Shared or private transfers are available, with departures from the airport or hotels in São Luís. It is advisable to check availability in advance. The journey takes about 4 hours along the BR-135 and MA-402 highways, which are mostly paved.

Regular Bus: The Cisne Branco bus company operates routes between São Luís bus station and Barreirinhas. The trip lasts about 4.5 to 5 hours. To get from the São Luís airport to the bus station, you will need to use a taxi or another form of transport.

Car Rental: You can rent a car at the São Luís airport and drive to Barreirinhas. The route is relatively easy, following the BR-135 and MA-402 highways. Note that in Barreirinhas, car use is limited, as tours within the park are conducted in authorized 4x4 vehicles.

Getting around Barreirinhas

Within the city, transportation is mainly provided by taxis, quad bikes, and 4x4 vehicles. Quad bikes are a popular option for exploring the dunes and lagoons, offering more freedom and access to remote areas. Taxi services are also available to take visitors to tourist spots and tours. Most of the roads are paved and well-marked, ensuring smooth travel around the area.
