MAIN ATTRACTIONS

Lagoa Azul and Lagoa do Peixe (near Barreirinhas): Access is usually by 4x4 vehicles, taking about 30 to 50 minutes along trails and dunes from the park entrance in Barreirinhas.

Other lagoons on the Lagoa Azul/Bonita circuit: Travel time between lagoons may vary, but tours generally last a few hours.

Atins (accessed via the mouth of the Preguiças River): The boat ride from Barreirinhas to Atins takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the tide and the type of boat. From Atins, you can reach more lagoons and dunes.

Lençóis Crossing (for more remote areas): This expedition usually lasts several days and involves 4x4 vehicle transfers and hikes across the dunes. Travel time to the starting points varies.

Small pets are also welcome! Choose between a double bed plus a single bed, or three single beds (please confirm your preference when booking). Air conditioning ensures comfortable nights.

CHECK-IN AND CHECK-OUT

Our team is available every day from 9 AM to 7 PM to assist you!

Check-in is done in person at the 24-hour reception, subject to local availability, from 2 PM to 5 PM.

If you need to check in earlier or after 5 PM, please let us know as soon as possible. If there is no other guest, we will be happy to help!

On your arrival day, we will send you all the necessary instructions. It is important that you have Wi-Fi access to receive them. If you need anything different, please inform us in advance.

For your safety, all guests must be identified. Two days before your arrival, we will remind you to send photos of your identification documents. Rest assured, your information will be protected in accordance with data protection laws.

Check-out is also done in person. Our housekeeper will arrive at 12 PM to prepare the accommodation for the next guests.

If you require a late check-out, please inform us as soon as possible. If there is no upcoming guest, we will be happy to accommodate your request!

LENÇÓIS MARANHENSES LOCATION

The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (PNLM) covers the municipality of Barreirinhas and was established in June 1981. It spans 155,000 hectares, with 90,000 hectares consisting of free-moving white sand dunes and seasonal rainwater lagoons.

Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita are two of the largest lagoons, featuring natural pools with crystal-clear water. The park’s landscape includes restingas (coastal forest), fields of open dunes, and stretches of oceanic coastline. The region attracts visitors from all over the world throughout the year.

The most well-known city in the Lençóis Maranhenses region, Barreirinhas, is located 250 km from São Luís, the capital of Maranhão, and serves as the main gateway for those wishing to explore the park.

Fascinating facts about Lençóis Maranhenses:

Temporary lagoons, ephemeral life: The famous lagoons are not permanent! They form during the wet season (usually January to June) when rainwater collects between the impermeable dunes. As the rains end and evaporation takes over, many lagoons dry up—returning with the next rainy season—in a remarkable natural cycle.

Resilient fish: Despite being isolated freshwater lagoons surrounded by sand dunes, some fish species survive here. One theory is that their eggs endure the dry period within the moist mud, hatching when the waters return. Another idea suggests that birds may carry eggs on their feet. This is a true testament to the resilience of life in a seemingly inhospitable environment!

TRANSPORTATION

Hello! To reach Barreirinhas, the main gateway to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, you have the following air and land transportation options:

By Air:

Barreirinhas Airport (BRB): Azul operates regular flights with small aircraft (Cessna, capacity of 9 passengers), connecting Barreirinhas to São Luís and Parnaíba. Frequency and availability may vary, so it's advisable to check with the airline before your trip. Prices are generally higher for this route.

Santo Amaro Airport: There are no scheduled flights to Santo Amaro. Access is primarily by road from Barreirinhas.

Parnaíba Airport (PHB): Located in Piauí, about a 3.5-hour drive from Barreirinhas. This is a good alternative for those who also wish to visit the Parnaíba Delta.

Jericoacoara Airport (JJD): Located farther away (approximately 9 hours by car), this option is ideal for travelers planning to complete the Rota das Emoções.

São Luís International Airport - Marechal Cunha Machado (SLZ): This is the main airport for those visiting Lençóis Maranhenses, with direct flights arriving from several major Brazilian cities.

How to get from São Luís to Barreirinhas:

Transfer (Van or Minibus): This is the most common and convenient option. Shared or private transfers are available from the airport or hotels in São Luís. Be sure to check availability in advance. The trip takes about 4 hours via highways BR-135 and MA-402, which are mostly paved.

Public Bus: Cisne Branco operates the route between the São Luís bus station and Barreirinhas. The journey takes between 4.5 and 5 hours. To reach the bus station from the airport, you will need to use a taxi or another form of transportation.

Car Rental: You can rent a car at the São Luís airport and drive to Barreirinhas. The route is relatively straightforward along BR-135 and MA-402. Keep in mind that car use is limited in Barreirinhas itself, as tours in the park are conducted with certified 4x4 vehicles.

Getting Around in Barreirinhas

Within the city, transportation is mainly provided by taxis, ATVs, and 4x4 vehicles. ATVs are popular for exploring the dunes and lagoons, offering more freedom and access to remote areas. Taxis are also available to transport visitors to tourist spots and tours. The roads are paved and well-signed throughout nearly the entire route, ensuring a smooth journey.
