ABOUT YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD AND THE CITY — HISTORY AND CURIOSITIES

Staying in São Vicente means staying in the birthplace of Brazilian civilization. Founded on January 22, 1532, by Martim Afonso de Sousa, it was the first official town in Brazil. Living History: As you walk through the Downtown area, you are standing on the soil where the first City Council of the Americas was born.

The Mother Church (Igreja Matriz), rebuilt in 1757 after pirate attacks and tsunamis, holds centuries of faith and resilience. The "Biquinha": The Biquinha de Anchieta (1553) is not just a fountain; it was where Father José de Anchieta taught the indigenous people and drank water. Today, it is also famous for the traditional sweets sold in the stalls nearby.

Suspension Bridge (Ponte Pênsil): Inaugurated in 1914 to transport the region's sewage, it became the city's main postcard. Designed by engineer Saturnino de Brito, it is the first suspension bridge in the country, featuring original steel cables brought from Germany.
