MAIN ATTRACTIONS

Lagoa Azul and Lagoa do Peixe (near Barreirinhas): Access is usually by 4x4 vehicles, taking about 30 to 50 minutes along trails and dunes from the park entrance in Barreirinhas.

Other lagoons on the Lagoa Azul/Bonita circuit: Travel time between lagoons may vary, but tours generally last a few hours.

Atins (accessed via the mouth of the Preguiças River): The boat ride from Barreirinhas to Atins takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the tide and the type of boat. From Atins, you can reach more lagoons and dunes.

Lençóis Crossing (for more remote areas): This expedition usually lasts several days and involves 4x4 vehicle transfers and hikes across the dunes. Travel time to the starting points varies.

Our team works from Sunday to Sunday, from 8AM to 8PM to better serve you!

Check-in is done in person at the reception, according to local availability, from 2PM until 5PM.

If you need early Checkin or after 5PM, please let us know as soon as possible. If you do not have a guest, we love to help!

On the day of your arrival, we will send instructions. It is important that you have Wi-fi to receive them. Let me know as soon as possible if you need something different.

Guests need to be identified, for everyone’s safety, so when 2 days are missing for their arrival, we will reinforce the photo request of the documents. Don’t worry, your data will be protected in light of the LGPD.

Checkout is in person. Our maid will arrive at 12PM to clean your accommodation for the next family.

If you need a late checkout, please let us know as soon as possible. If you don’t have a guest later, we love to help!

THE LENÇÓIS MARANHENSES

The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (PNLM) encompasses the municipality of Barreirinhas and was established in June 1981. It covers an area of 155,000 hectares, of which 90,000 hectares are made up of mobile white sand dunes and seasonal rainwater lagoons.

Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita are among the largest lagoons in the region, featuring natural pools of crystal-clear waters. The park consists of restinga (coastal forest), fields of shifting dunes, and ocean coastline and is visited year-round by travelers from around the world.

The most popular municipality in the Lençóis Maranhenses, Barreirinhas, is located 250 km from São Luís, the capital of Maranhão, and serves as the main gateway for those looking to explore the region.

Fascinating facts about Lençóis Maranhenses:

Temporary lagoons, fleeting life: The famous lagoons are not permanent! They appear during the rainy season (generally from January to June), when rainwater is trapped between the impermeable dunes. As the rains end and evaporation takes over, many lagoons dry up, only to reappear in the natural cycle the following year.

Resilient fish: Although these freshwater lagoons are isolated among the dunes, some fish species manage to survive. One theory is that their eggs endure the dry period in moist mud, hatching when the water returns. Another possibility is that birds carry eggs stuck to their feet. This demonstrates how life adapts even in seemingly harsh environments!

The dance of the dunes: The dunes are constantly shifting! Strong winds, especially in the dry season, cause the dunes to move, revealing new shapes, and uncovering or concealing lagoons. The landscape is always changing.

A desert with water: Despite its desert-like appearance and vast sandy areas, Lençóis Maranhenses receives significant rainfall during the wet season. This rare combination of abundant water and strong winds is what creates the beautiful lagoons.

TRANSPORTATION

Hello! To reach Barreirinhas, the main gateway to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, you have the following air and ground transportation options:

By plane:

Barreirinhas Airport (BRB): Azul offers regular flights in small aircraft (Cessna with capacity for 9 passengers), connecting Barreirinhas to São Luís and Parnaíba. Frequency and availability may vary, so it is advisable to check with the airline before traveling. Prices are generally higher.

Santo Amaro Airport: There are no regular flights to Santo Amaro. Access is mainly by road, departing from Barreirinhas.

Parnaíba Airport (PHB): Located in the state of Piauí, about a 3.5-hour drive to Barreirinhas. This is a good option if you also want to visit the Parnaíba Delta.

Jericoacoara Airport (JJD): Farther away (approximately a 9-hour trip), this airport is recommended for those planning to do the full "Rota das Emoções."

Marechal Cunha Machado International Airport, São Luís (SLZ): This is the main airport for those visiting Lençóis Maranhenses, with direct flights from several major cities across Brazil.

How to get from São Luís to Barreirinhas:

Transfer (Van or Minibus): This is the most common and practical option. Shared or private transfers are available, departing from the airport or hotels in São Luís. Check availability in advance. The trip takes about 4 hours via BR-135 and MA-402, which are paved for most of the route.

Regular bus: Cisne Branco operates the line between the São Luís bus station and Barreirinhas. The trip takes between 4.5 and 5 hours. To get from the airport to the São Luís bus station, you will need to use a taxi or other transportation.

Car rental: You can rent a car at São Luís airport and drive to Barreirinhas. The drive is relatively straightforward, following BR-135 and MA-402. Keep in mind that the use of personal vehicles in Barreirinhas is limited, as tours in the park are conducted in licensed 4x4 vehicles.

Transportation within Barreirinhas

Within the city, transportation is mainly by taxi, quad bikes, and 4x4 vehicles. Quad bikes are popular for exploring the dunes and lagoons, offering more freedom and access to remote areas. In addition, taxi services are available to take visitors to tourist spots and tours. The roads are paved and well marked throughout most of the route, ensuring smooth travel.
